A Roadmap for Healing

About 12STR

Strategic Trauma & Abuse Recovery© (12STR) was developed by Dr. Denice Colson. It is trauma-specific treatment model that meets SAMHSA’s criteria for trauma-specific intervention. There are three widely accepted phases of trauma recovery: Safety, Reprocessing and Grieving, and Reconnecting. 12STR creates a definitive plan to work through these phases for both the provider and the participant. The phases are designed to be progressive, as each phase and stage builds on the previous and propels the participant forward. However, each person works through the stages at their own pace. The phases and stages provide a roadmap through trauma recovery. They act as stepping stones strategically placed around the pitfalls of trauma recovery.

The heart of recovery is Phase 2: Reprocessing and Grieving, the central point of recovery, where increasingly focused work begins.
